It is located along the national highway about 9 kilometers from Basco and is being maintained by both Mahatao and Ivana Local Government Units (LGU\u2019s).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-compact-font-size\">Mt. Matarem<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">was created during the Pliocene Period (around million years after the Mahatao volcano erupted. It is now an extinct volcano. It\u2019s name \u201cMatarem\u201d means \u201csharp\u201d or \u201csteep\u201d. Its summit rises to around 495 meters above sea level. It is one of the sources of potable drinking water of Mahatao, also home of endemic species of flora and fauna, home to the Ivatan delicacy \u201cMarida\u201d or forest snail, and the 2nd highest point in Batanes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-compact-font-size\"><strong>House of Dakay<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Probably the most photographed Ivatan house, it was built of lime and stone in 1887 and owned by Luisa Estrella who bequeathed it to her favorite nephew, Jose \u201cDakay\u201d Estrella. A survivor of the destructive earthquake of September 13, 1918 which has destroyed much of the town, its shutters and floor have never been changed and has retained much of its authentic look through the decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-compact-font-size\"><strong><strong>Tampan Burial Marker and Ijang Fortress<\/strong><\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This boat shaped burial marker is so far the most accessible among those found in the province. It is located a few steps away from the Ijang in Vatang. Its stone design includes an elongated stone on one end which resembles a Pilot\u2019s seat on a real tataya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-compact-font-size\"><strong><strong><strong>San Jose Spanish Bridge<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Located in the heart of the town, this was constructed and form part of the main road of Ivana during the Spanish period as the road leads to the doorstep of the Church. It is being used to date by people and trucks alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-compact-font-size\"><strong><strong><strong>Honesty Coffee Shop<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An unmanned refreshment store which has become famous worldwide for showcasing Ivatan\u2019s honesty. There is no standby seller, the owners rely on the honesty of its customers when paying for goods taken from the store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-compact-font-size\"><strong><strong><strong>San Jose el Obrero Church<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Built in 1784 by Fr. Jose Fausto de Cuevas, it is the only church in Batan with a separate belltower constructed 30 years later. The present fa\u00e7ade was built by Fr. Fabian Martin in 1866-1869. Located by the coastal area, it is here where Katipunero revolutionaries commanded by Captain Perea landed on September 18, 1898 to liberate the province from the Spaniards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-compact-font-size\"><strong><strong><strong>Ivana Church Ruins<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This place used to be the altar piece sacristy, baptistery, and other religious activities is probably built in the year 1784-1785. It came out to be the largest and best constructed in Batanes. In 1850, after the fire, it was found necessary by Fr. Fabian Martin to shorten it in the area of the sanctuary as the parishioners exiled in Ivana were already sent back to Sabtang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-compact-font-size\"><strong><strong><strong>Ivana Marine Santuary<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Is a body of marine water consisting of some Forty Three hectares and situated at Capasuan, Vatang and Chararakuhan at Baran-gay San Vicente.
